Major Learning Outcome 1: Language Proficiency
Students are able to communicate effectively in Spanish in three modes: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational, and in a culturally appropriate manner in a variety of social and professional settings and circumstances at the Advanced Low level of language proficiency, according to ACTFL Guidelines
Under this criteria, I have completed SPAN 301: Composition and Oral Practice (Fall 2021), SPAN 304: Introduction to Hispanic Literature (Fall 2021), SPAN 305: Spanish for the Professions (Fall 2021), SPAN 362: Latin American Literature in Translation (Spring 2022)
Language proficiency allows students to communicate effectively in Spanish throughout three modes: interpersonal, interpretative and presentational. Connecting them to a culturally appropriate manner in social and professional settings, in Advanced or Low-level language proficiency conversations according to the ACTFL Guidelines. I was able to communicate with classmates and professors, besides giving presentations in front of the class, which help me to improve my speaking and grammar skills. I had the opportunity to express my beliefs and opinion on subjects of matter that are part of my culture, but also incorporate and share about others' cultures. These courses reflected historical and cultural events from different parts of Latin America and the Caribbean, which have affected and influenced their own people. For these reasons, I decided to write a Critical Analysis and a presentation of the novel A memoir: Before the Night Falls by Reinaldo Arenas. Focusing on the LGTBQ+ community in Cuba under Castro’s regimen (Castrismo) such as restrictions, rights, and power relationships in Cuba during the XX century. This novel narrates the inner and external conflicts of Arenas and his battle against Fidel Castro through literature. The last mode was achieved by a class presentation. I was able to compare and contrast to find parallelism in this novel and the short story “He Has Gone” by Benjamin Saenz. In order to give a historical, biographical, and interpretative context to my research on the topic. All courses have had a massive impact on my ways of expression, reactions, and perspectives about the culture and practices of different parts of the Hispanic and Caribbean regions, but most importantly give my opinion using accurate language and mode of expression.
