Course Description: Designed for students interested in developing a functional use of Spanish for the professions (business, education, law, medicine, social work, etc.), from a Hispanic cultural perspective. Students will have an opportunity to practice and develop their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. The Spanish-speaking world will provide the cultural context, and the area of business the content area. Taught in Spanish.
Course Narrative: In this class, we were able to learn a varied vocabulary for six broad Spanish areas: health, business, human resources, technology, and finance. Every week we read or watch various articles and documentaries to analyze and discuss in each class, thus facilitating the use of the vocabulary learned during reading or listening. In addition, the course was divided into two sections. The first part was a discussion in small breakout rooms, and the second discussion was as a class, in which we could ask questions or general ideas about what we learned with the weekly material. The main objective of this course was to expose ourselves to different work environments and expand our vocabulary in these six areas. The final project of this class consisted of an oral exam (job interview), building a cover letter, resumé, and letter of recommendation, through which we could show our ability to obtain a job and create the necessary elements to apply for a career in the real world. To complete each of the assigned works, we all worked with different groups during each session to exchange ideas and practice for the future job interview with Professor Vila Dieguez. This class exposed me to other areas in the world of work but also showed me the difficulties and realities of each job analyzed in class. And, of course, it helped me to build from scratch the necessary elements and counseling to be able to apply for any job and be able to be hired for it.
