WLC 300- Major Proseminar
Course Description: This course introduces students to the Japanese Language and Culture, or Spanish Language and Hispanic Cultures majors. Students acquire knowledge and understanding needed to fulfill Major Learning Outcomes for the programs, including literature, culture and linguistics, and to develop individual learning plans. The course examines opportunities in related professional and career paths, such as graduate education and teaching credential preparation.
Course Narrative: In WLC 300 I learned about the importance of the different areas of the major, besides the different careers and professional paths we could continue after completing our studies in the program. This class introduces the different components needed to successfully complete the program, but also the introduction to the two majors Japanese Language and Culture and Spanish Language and Hispanic Cultures. Each of the classes is rotated with the different instructors of both degrees, who show and share their specializations academic and professional achievements in their journeys. In this class I began to complete important works such as my ILP, where I selected the courses that were required but also of my interest to learn about my major and on the other learn about secondary cultures. In this course I also started one of the most important projects to record the results of my final research, in this case my E-portfolio. In which I document each of the courses I take and the assignments I upload as proof of my understanding of the material taught. The interaction with the students of the other major made me grow my perspectives and discover new horizons around both cultures and give me the opportunity to compare and contrast the ideologies, beliefs and traditions about both societies. This class allowed me to discover different areas of interest within my academic path but also areas that I would like to discover in Japanese culture. And of course, I learned a lot about the technological aspect since it was the introduction to the electronic final assessment of the major in which my research investigation, class works and prove assignments would be published. This course was a great tool to understand the requirements needed for Japanese and Spanish Language and Cultures and have a close interaction with classmates from both majors.
