Course Description:
Students will become involved in community projects of importance and relevance that engage them in matters relative to justice, compassion, diversity and social responsibility, and help them become effective multicultural community builders. The course is designed to help you enhance your skills in personal and professional communication as well as classroom discussions and oral presentations in Spanish.
Through the learning service I achieved immersion within the Latinx and Chicanx community to develop my awareness in the community and as an individual to expand my skills and be able to create plans that help solve problems within society. Through the material and activities taught in class I was able to make connections for my final reflection on the problems I observed within my place of service. For my hours in community service, I decided to help out at Salinas public libraries. By serving as a tutor within the computer literacy program and the citizenship test program, I was able to realize the great needs and lack of help for the retired farming community. Some of the problems I observed were the lack of solvency to cover medical expenses, since most students were older adults without a job and with little help from their former employers and the government. Being a class with Spanish and English speakers this generated a contact between languages, where I witnessed those Spanish speakers showed greater interest in learning vocabulary in English. However, monolinguals in English did not show any interest in learning Spanish. Which I found very interesting, since I think that knowing that the dominant language is English did not see a need to learn it. Exposure to my own community made me realize that there is still a long way to go to solve the problems that are present in the Latinx and Chicanx community. On the other hand, that my decisions have a positive impact socially and with this create social awareness through my actions and responses for my community. To conclude, this course helped me to improve my analytical skills and observations to be able to quickly and effectively help not only my community, but society in general.
