Course Description
Through the completion of a community project, students will demonstrate that they have actively immersed themselves in authentic Hispanic cultural and linguistic environments and have internalized the language and cultural experience, from which they have developed personal understanding and new perspectives of Hispanic communities. This course is taught in Spanish.
Course narrative: The SPAN 495 course allowed me to expose myself culturally and linguistically in the Latino community to demonstrate my understanding of certain practices, values and beliefs. Through different discussion forums we presented our ideas about oral narratives their function within society and how these records are essential for the continuity of certain practices. In this course our ultimate goal was to conduct an interview relevant to the values within the Latinx community. Which led me to conduct two interviews focusing on the maintenance of values in male chauvinist homes. Both interviews clarified key points on this topic and the negative effects on children growing up in these households. I wanted to see if men had an advantage because of being part of the gender in power in this case. However, I discovered that both genders are exposed to the ravages and impositions by their parents. After having both interviews and texts that could support my theme, the final narrative was carried out where I exposed both the answers of the two participants and quotes that demonstrated the suffering of mothers and children and the repercussions that come to have when living this type of experiences. This class allowed me to become even more involved in issues that still affect our society. In addition, give me the opportunity to learn more about the general and deep perspectives of each of the members of the community and connect with them through their oral narratives to preserve their identity, essence and above all the principles that are fundamental for the construction and maintenance of a safe and placid place for all. Finally, having put all my ideas, learnings and the values of the participants will help to expose and avoidThat this type of practices continue with us, although by the project I could realize that there is still much to be done to completely eliminate this type of ideologies in parents and especially in children.
