Course Description: This content-based course focuses on developing the three modes of communication - interpersonal, interpretive and presentational - with an emphasis on academic writing through readings and discussions. The use of authentic texts from Hispanic cultural and literary traditions allows learners to consolidate oral and written information. Taught in Spanish.
Course Narrative: SPAN 301 is designed to improve our communication skills, both written and oral, through a series of group activities, short essays, and presentations. In this class, we created a group presentation on a topic of interest. My group was made up of Gabriela Aguilar, Rene Hurtado, and myself. The three of us conducted research about “Artistas pro igualdad de género y empoderamiento de la mujer”. The artists we presented have a lot of influence in the Spanish-speaking world, but also are present in American Productions (Hollywood); for example, Salma Hayek, Mon Laferte, and Rebeca Lane. During our research, we discovered that these three artists have dedicated their careers to supporting women's empowerment, as well as to supporting their communities to raise their voices against racism and inequality. In these presentations, we mostly focused on our speaking skills, but later on, we learned about narrative, description, and the use of pros and cons in writing to create our own stories to share in class or with a partner. This class opened my mind to creative writing, but more importantly, taught me more about grammar and helped us improve our capacity related to oral and writing skills that are part of the MLO 1 and MLO 2, and also, I discovered my passion for narrative writing.
