Course Description: Students perform introductory translation assignments from Spanish to English and vice versa. They develop an understanding of translation theory through reading and class discussion and come to understand communicative translation and compare it to a direct, word-for-word approach. Problematic grammatical, discursive, and pragmatic issues are analyzed, and the grammar of Spanish is reviewed in detail. Taught in Spanish.
Course narrative: In this course, the new modalities and basic techniques for translating from Spanish to English and vice versa were taught. We show our understanding of the material taught through different practices with group classmates when performing a simultaneous and literary translation. In addition, there was the opportunity to participate in different seminars with great figures in political translation, with which we were able to learn about the different jobs and responsibilities of interpreters and translators. In this class, the political, health, advertising, and educational areas were covered. For each of the previous frames, we were given a specific vocabulary to expand our words as much as in English and Spanish. During the semester, different translation activities by sight are carried out, where our understanding of the techniques and our knowledge, not only academic but also cultural, are put to the test through sayings and phrases from both societies. Each week we worked on different assignments to translate literature or videos. One of the final works was to translate a document in the different areas that were covered during the semester in order to observe how we used the vocabulary acquired during each session. For this activity, we had to show our proficiency in both languages to present a detailed and understandable translation for the public. Although we did it individually, we had the opportunity to work and receive feedback from my classmates and the instructor before delivering the final version. Each activity carried out in this class gave us the opportunity to streamline our translation and interpretation. We were allowed to learn the terms and the latest procedures through practices, which included mistakes and hits, also realizing that each version depends on the place to which the version is directed and the background of each translator and interpreter. Although this course presented the foundations of translation, it showed us other areas in which we can venture with our major
